Trade , Non - Homothetic Preferences , and the Impact of Country Size on Wages ∗

چکیده
We study the impact of country size on wages in a two-country trade model with monopolistic competition and non-homothetic preferences. Since there is renewed interest in nonhomothetic preferences and variable markups, we revisit standard results on wages obtained using homothetic (CES) preferences. The standard results are that, under free trade, wages are equal and that, with iceberg costs, the larger country has a higher wage. With non-homothetic preferences, these results do not necessarily hold and it is important to distinguish between the number of workers and the labor endowment per worker. Under free trade, the relative wage depends on the relative labor endowment per worker under certain conditions. With iceberg costs, the larger country does not necessarily get the higher wage unless there is a representative consumer.

The Dynamic Effects of Export and Technological Changes on Relative Wages
he links among trade, technological changes, and worker earnings have been the subject of intense research during the past few decades. The current literature on this subject shows that trade liberalization and technological changes are the main drivers of demand for skilled workers and a rise in the wage premium. In the present article, a panel of 134 Iranian manufacturing industries over the ...
متن کاملTrade and Growth in an Unequal Global Economy∗
This paper studies the patterns of trade and the incentives to innovate in an unequal global economy. We introduce non-homothetic preferences in a general-equilibrium model of endogenous growth and international trade between two countries, and argue that the effects of market integration on the consequent trade patterns and the incentives to innovate depend on the degree of income inequality a...
متن کاملEfficiency and equilibrium when preferences are time-inconsistent
We consider an exchange economy with time-inconsistent consumers whose preferences are additively separable. When these consumers trade in a sequence of markets, their time-inconsistency may introduce a non-convexity that gives them an incentive to trade lotteries. If there are many consumers, competitive equilibria with and without lotteries exist. The existence of symmetric equilibria may req...
متن کاملManagerial versus Production Wages: Offshoring, Country Size and Endowments
We look at managerial and production wages in countries that di er in size and relative endowments. Production labor is assumed to be a variable input composed of tradable tasks, while managerial labor is a xed, non-tradable input. Task performance is subject to increasing returns to scale on the country level, as in Grossman & Rossi-Hansberg (2010). We rst analyze country size and relative end...
متن کاملNotes on the Theory of Tariffs
We suppose that there are two countries trading two commodities, country 1 exporting commodity 1 to country 2, and that country 1 imposes a tariff on its import of commodity 2 while country 2 remains passive and does not retaliate. We assume that preferences in country 1 are identical and homothetic. A classic theorem, going back to Mill (1844), Torrens (1844), and Bickerdike (1907), states tha...
